Biography
Tony Castro, the author of Mickey Mantle: America's Prodigal Son, is a prize-winning columnist and political writer whose work has included covering American presidential campaigns, reporting on civil wars in Central America and writing for Sports Illustrated.
 
He is the author of the widely-acclaimed civil rights history, Chicano Power: The Emergence of Mexican America, (E.P. Dutton), which Publishers Weekly called "brilliant... a valuable contribution to the understanding of our time" and which was the basis for the award-winning PBS series.

His dual biography of baseball greats Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Gehrig and the Babe: The Friendship, The Feud, will be published by Potomac Books in 2007.

Castro is currently a reporter and columnist for The Los Angeles Daily News.
 

A former staff writer for Sports Illustrated, Castro was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University where he did graduate work on American Studies and politics -- and studied under Homeric scholar and translator Robert Fitzgerald.
 
He has reported on politics for the Dallas Morning News, the Houston Post, the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times, and he was a columnist and foreign correspondent for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner.  In Hollywood, he has also written for the screen and was one of the writers for the critically successful NBC drama Crime Story.  In 2000, Castro covered George W. Bush's presidential campaign, and he is currently writing The Baseball Presidency: The Making of George W. Bush.
 
A native of Waco, Texas, Castro is a graduate of Baylor University and was also a fellow at the Washington Journalism Center.

Castro and his wife, former model Renee LaSalle, their two sons and their Labrador Retriever Griffey live in Beverly Hills, California.
